Le Calcinaie is composed of 30 acres covered with vines with perfect exposure, beautifully tended, and olive trees. Tenuta Le Calcinaie is a beautiful small estate just three kilometers from the town of San Gimignano (in the province of Siena). It is named after the composition of the soil of this zone: in fact layers of limestone, originating from marine deposits of the Pliocene epoch, are found at half a meter underground (“calce” means lime in Italian).
The wine is of a red ruby color with an orange tinged edge with aromas of dark cherries, blood oranges and cedar. The palate is a bit spicy with notes of dried figs and plums with moderate tannins. The finish is long and vibrant.
